Cumulus Inc, Breakfast

45 Flinders Ln, Melbourne Vic
(03) 9650 1445

Apparently everyone loves Cumulus Inc. I'd never been, so I thought I'd check it out for breakfast. The morning was one of Melbourne's coldest, windiest and wettest days we've had this year. For that reason, I thought we'd be a shoe in to get a table without a wait. Especially early on a Saturday morning.

At Cumulus Inc, it seemingly doesn't matter what the weather is like or what day it is. People will flock here, because it's meant to be 'that' good!
We waited about 20 minutes for a table, in the corner which is reserved for the waiting cattle. Cumulus is a big industrial room, with beautiful warehouse style windows looking out onto Flinders Lane.

We ordered the Ham and Cheese Toastie with relish and avocado ($14). I can't remember the fancy name of the cheese or the windswept location where the pig lived that the ham came from or which trendy bakery the bread came from. But as tasty as the toastie was, it was small. Not really what you'd expect for $14. You'd definitely need two to fill you up.

I'm sure the Lunches and Dinners here are better value, since the place is so popular. With so many breakfast places in Melbourne though, there's no room for places that don't provide value for money, because there are so many that do.

I had the Turkish baked eggs ($17) a few weekends ago - just stunning. By the time I'd had 2 coffees, almost a $30 breakfast, so for me Cumulus is only special treat breakfast. Shame it's no bookings. I'd love to meet friends there for birthdays etc...but with no guarantees it's a bit risky.

On another note, I tried to have breakfast at Porgie and Mr Jones in Hawthorn the same morning, there were 10 plus people waiting for a table - outside in the rain. I moved on.

My GF lives a block from Porgie and it's always the same there. They do a great egg, bacon and cheese muffin to take away for a very reasonable $4.50 if you cant be bothered waiting for a table. Sounds like there's room in Hawthorn for another good breakky place!

Don't think I would head back to Cumulus for breakky. Was loud, busy, I'm not a fan of waiting for a table on a Saturday morning and the food isn't value for money. Just because it's sourdough, doesn't mean I want to pay $14 for a toasted sandwich.

I agree with you. The food tastes good, but the serving is too small and for me taste alone is not enough. You've got to give me value for my money. Plus I don't like that I always have to wait to be seated.

Definately agree with you Kirstine, I will avoid a place if I know there's always going to be a line there. Places like Porgie (mentioned above), Three Bags Full in Abbotsford or Mitte in North Fitzroy.
I prefer to visit the places that I know are good, but don't have tag of being the "it" cafe of the moment. I'll go back to those places when the hype has died down.

I agree, Cumulus is not the place to go for breakfast. They are really slow with service when you're trying to hurry out the door to get to work! And the food is not special enough to justify its higher prices.

Yeh, the service was anything but speedy. But given how busy it was at the time, I thought that was fair enough.

I had breakfast there once but ages ago. It was OK but I love the dinners there :)

Yeh - thought the dinners there might be a bit better value than the breakfasts.
That said, the other breakfast dishes quite possibly were better value - just not this one.
